Understanding Acne & Acne Scarring

Acne can develop when pores become blocked with excess oil, dead skin cells and bacteria, leading to congestion, inflammation and breakouts.

For some people, acne is linked to hormonal changes, stress, skincare products, genetics or a combination of factors. It can appear as blackheads, whiteheads, inflamed spots, deeper cysts or ongoing congestion, and it can affect both teenagers and adults.

Acne scarring can occur when inflammation affects the deeper layers of the skin. More severe breakouts, such as nodules or cysts, are more likely to leave marks or textural changes as the skin heals.

Picking or squeezing spots can also increase the risk of scarring and post-inflammatory pigmentation, as it can damage the skin and prolong inflammation.

Because acne and acne scarring can vary so much from person to person, a consultation helps identify whether your skin needs calming, clearing, resurfacing, strengthening or a combination of approaches.

Can acne scarring be improved?

In many cases, the appearance of acne scarring can be improved with a tailored treatment plan. The most suitable approach will depend on the type of scarring, whether there is any active acne, your skin type and how your skin responds to treatment.

What treatments are suitable for acne scarring?

Microneedling, polyneedling, medical-grade peels and selected laser treatments may be recommended to help improve skin texture and support overall skin quality. We’ll advise on the most appropriate route after assessing your skin in person.

Can I have treatment if I still have active acne?

Possibly, but it depends on your skin at the time of consultation. In some cases, it may be better to calm and stabilise active breakouts before starting treatments aimed at scarring or texture. We’ll guide you on the safest and most effective next step.
