Understanding Pigmentation

Pigmentation can develop for a number of reasons, and often it’s a combination of factors rather than a single cause.

The most common trigger is sun exposure, which stimulates the skin to produce more melanin (the pigment that gives skin its colour). Over time, this can lead to areas of uneven tone or darker patches.

Other contributing factors can include hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy or menopause, as well as inflammation from acne or skin irritation, which can leave behind darker marks as the skin heals.

In some cases, ageing also plays a role, as years of sun exposure begin to show more visibly in the skin.

Everyone’s skin behaves slightly differently, which is why understanding the underlying cause is an important first step in choosing the right treatment.

Is pigmentation the same as melasma?

Not always. Pigmentation is a broad term for areas of darker colour in the skin. Melasma is one specific type of pigmentation that is often linked with hormones and sun exposure. Because different types of pigmentation need different approaches, assessment is important before starting treatment.

Can pigmentation be treated?

In many cases, the appearance of pigmentation can be improved, but the right approach depends on the type of pigmentation, how long it has been present, your skin type and what may be causing it. A consultation allows us to assess your skin properly and recommend the most suitable treatment plan.

What treatments can help with pigmentation?

Depending on your skin, suitable options may include IPL-based treatments such as illumiFacial, medical-grade peels, carefully selected skincare, or a combination approach. In some cases, laser may also be considered. We’ll advise on the safest and most appropriate option during your consultation.

Will pigmentation come back after treatment?
